The exploitation of geothermal resources from shallow aquifers, from tunnel drainage as well as from deep groundwater systems will become significant for regional and supra-regional energy suppliers. Also commercial companies and infrastructure firms (e.g. OeBB for usage of geothermal energy as supply of railway stations) that want to use geothermal resources will become more and more customers of this business area.
The development of regional heat transport models aims not only at a more efficient usage of geothermal energy in future but also at the protection of groundwater against excessive heat input from human activity.
The investigation and usage of deep groundwater requires the involvement of geophysical methods, which will be assured by external cooperation. Deep groundwater has particular significance because of its temperature and a possible exploitation of geothermal energy.
